PIOPA was founded in 2003 by local I/O professionals Jeff Johnson and Rainer Seitz as an informal association of individuals with backgrounds, professional experience, and education in Industrial, Organizational, and Work Psychology, or other related disciplines and working in the Oregon and Southwest Washington region. According to the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP), Industrial & Organizational psychologists contribute to an organization’s success by improving the performance of its people.

The primary goals of PIOPA are to:

  1. foster a community for professionals involved in the scientific application of psychology to the workplace.
  2. promote the practice and awareness of Industrial, Organizational, and Work Psychology in the greater Portland business community.
  3. provide learning opportunities and an exchange of ideas for participants.
  4. serve as an open forum where participants may meet and discuss topics of mutual interest and concern.
