Malibu 400 Production Stats
Unlike some other car manufacturers, Chevrolet
did not maintain detailed breakdowns of engine combinations installed in
all their various models. So while it is known how many Chevelle coupes and
convertibles were built in 1970, 1971, and 1972, it is not known exactly how many of these
cars were equipped with the LS3 big-block engines. Combining the known
production figures of specific models and the production information
available from the Tonawanda engine plant, estimates have been generated on
how many Chevelles were built with LS3 engines, and thus how many Malibu
400s were likely built. Below are estimated totals excerpted from
the Chevrolet A-Body Production Totals print created by fellow Team Chevelle
member Dan Carr.

Engine Specifications
The following table lists engine specifications
for all LS3 400 engines installed in Chevelle models. Note that for the 1970
model year the L34 engine (402/350hp) rather than the LS3 was installed in
SS models. Therefore, the codes listed below for 1970 are only valid for
non-SS models. On the other hand, some of the suffix codes for 1971 and 1972
are correct for both regular Chevelles as well as SS models since they both
received LS3 engines. There was no separate L34 engine for SS models in
those years.
