Welcome to Malibu400.com, a site
dedicated to the Chevelle Malibu 400. If you're reading this, you're
probably already a fan of the Chevelle, Chevrolet's mid-sized car first
introduced in 1964. So what is a Malibu 400? Read on and learn all about
it!
What is a Malibu 400?
The Malibu 400 is a variation of the Chevelle
Malibu built from 1970 to 1972. From 1965 to 1969, if Chevrolet customers
wanted to order a Chevelle with a big-block engine through the normal
Chevrolet dealer ordering process, they had to order the SS package. In
other words, aside from cars ordered through special channels (e.g. the COPO
order process), there were no non-SS Chevelles built with big-block engines.
That all changed during the 1970 model year, when Chevrolet made available
the LS3 big-block engine for installation in any Chevelle except SS models.
This included all Malibu models, from station wagons to four-doors to
convertibles, as well as base model Chevelles. The LS3, referred to as the
"400 Turbo Jet" engine, actually displaced 402 cubic inches.
So, there are indeed Chevelle Malibus with
factory-installed big-block engines that are not SS models. Click on the
links to the left for more facts and photos of the unique Malibu 400!
About Me
My name is Rainer and I've been interested in
Chevelles ever since I bought my first car over 20 years ago - a 1966
Chevelle. Back in 1999 I acquired a Malibu 400, and since then I've tried to
learn as much as possible about these unique cars. I decided to create this
website to share the information I've acquired, and help educate people
about the Malibu 400. I live in Washington State and belong to the Chevelle
& El Camino Club of Oregon, the American Chevelle Enthusiasts Society
(ACES), and Team Chevelle.
